Last year’s model with Intel Core i5-13500H
1. Image Generation with Stable Diffusion
The older laptop (no NPU) put heavy strain on the GPU — around 90% usage. The new NPU-powered machine finished the same task twice as fast, using significantly less power.
2. Video Editing in Wondershare Filmora
Previewing used similar CPU/GPU power, but rendering on the newer system was faster and more energy-efficient — a clear win for the NPU.
3. Audio Beat Creation in Audacity
This was less impressive. While the NPU reduced GPU usage, it didn’t speed up processing. Likely, the model wasn’t optimized for NPUs — something future updates could fix.
Real-Life Applications Beyond Laptops
Intel also partnered with Samsung on a medical ultrasound machine. Previously, such devices relied on power-hungry GPUs. Now, using NPUs helps cut energy use and lighten the load on CPUs and GPUs — a big win in healthcare technology.
Why It Matters: Privacy, Efficiency, and Sustainability
With on-device AI, we're not just getting faster performance — we’re also:

Reducing energy usage by avoiding server farms
Lowering operational costs for both companies and consumers
The International Energy Agency reports that data centers (including AI and crypto) consumed about 2% of global energy in 2022 — a number expected to double by 2026. That’s a serious concern for the environment. On-device AI could help keep this under control.
